Congratulations to our 2021/22 SCRA Scholarship Recipients!

The SCRA Scholarship was established as part of our association’s belief that our young athletes are the key to continuing the sport of Ringette into the future. The SCRA Scholarship aims to encourage our athletes to support the sport of Ringette through playing, coaching, officiating and volunteering, and to continue playing Ringette while attending a post-secondary education program in Canada.

Our association is incredibly proud of our many inspiring young athletes, past and present, that give back to SCRA, the sport of Ringette and our greater community. The Scholarship Committee receives so many wonderful applications every year — it is our pleasure to once again be able to recognize two young athletes this year. We are pleased to share a few highlights about our recipients to celebrate their accomplishments.

First Place $1000 Award Recipient: Erin Ung

Erin is currently attending the University of Calgary completing a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences. Her extensive ringette career includes seven years with SCRA, from Bunnies (U8) through to U12A. She is a part of the Calgary AA since U14.

In her letter of recommendation that was included with her application, her coach described as extremely driven and motivated to achieve her goals.  “Erin has balanced an extremely busy schedule during her first year of University. Her Ringette schedule is typically 4-5 days per week for team events, plus traveling out of town multiple times for tournaments. It is a hectic pace of high-intensity training and competition that lasts for about 7 months of the year. For someone to maintain a full course load at University, while keeping up with these athletic demands, is not an easy task. Erin not only “kept up” with both of them, but she excelled. This is a true testament to her work ethic, motivation, and time-management skills, which I believe will set her up for great success well into her future. Erin intends to maintain a lifestyle of high-level academics and athletics (and coaching!) and I have little doubt that she will do very well in all aspects.”

Second Place $500 Award Recipient: Shea McQuay

Shea is currently attending the University of Calgary and is completing her Biological Sciences degree. She has played for SCRA for 9 years, and was a team ambassador for the Western Canadian Ringette Championships in 2015. Watch for her as a minor official in Calgary for the 2022 Western Canadian Ringette Championships!

In her application, Shea expressed that ringette “developed a core group of friends” who helped each other improve their skills. “I knew that I could rely on the other players to help me through games if I was having an off day and I would always do the same for them.”
