Congratulations to our 2023/24 SCRA Scholarship Recipients!

May. 01, 2024

SCRA is pleased to announce our 2023/24 SCRA Scholarship recipients, Lauren Lesko, Jannelle Mozill and Sophia MacDonald.

The SCRA Scholarships were created to support our young athletes to stay in sport while working toward their academic goals. The goal of the scholarship program is to encourage our players to continue playing Ringette after the completion of high school, while registered in a post-secondary education program in Canada.

The Committee receives so many wonderful applications every year so it was great to be able to recognize three athletes this year. We are pleased to share a bit about our recipients to celebrate their awards.

First Place $1000 Award Recipient: Lauren Lesko

Lauren has played Ringette for 13 years, starting in U7 with South Calgary. She has traveled many provinces to play or participate in ringette from BC to Nova Scotia She is an active volunteer with SCRA helping with our evaluations and teaching gym ringette at junior high schools.

In her application, Lauren expressed that ringette has taught her many valuable lessons including the importance of communication. It is the communication with teammates both on and off the ice that has made her successful in ringette.

SCRA is proud to support Lauren in her academic pursuits to become a nurse, inspired by her ringette coaches! On behalf of all SCRA athletes, we wish Lauren the best in her studies and continued involvement with ringette!

Second Place $500 Award Recipient: Janelle Mozill

Janelle has played Ringette for 12 years, including 11 seasons with SCRA beginning in U9 and continuing up to U19. She became a full-time goalie in her first year of U12. This year, she was an assistant coach on our U14C, and a goalie coach for U16B. As a player, she started with  CORA and came back to U19 to be an overage goalie, to help our association. When she wasn’t on the ice, she was in classes studying for her Bachelor of Arts degree.

In Janelle’s application letter she said that “ringette has always been something that I could count on, and the community I have gained from the sport is also something I feel I will always have.”  We are proud to support Janelle in her studies. On behalf of all our young athletes, thank you Janelle for continuing to make time for the sport of ringette.

Third Place $250 Award Recipient: Sophia MacDonald

Sophia has played 9 years with South Calgary Ringette starting at U10 and this year with U19A. She was a dedicated JR coach for 3 years, and has been an active Come Try Ringette and Ringette For All volunteer.

In Sophia’s application letter, she expressed that ringgit taught her how to work under pressure, and how to collaborate with others being a part of a team. Her teammate’s passion for ringette was used to pursue a common goal, such as City Champions and ESSO Golden Ring Gold Medalists.

A former Coach indicated that Sophia’s natural leadership qualities were recognized by her teammates. Being chosen as Captain and peers demonstrate their trust and accountability to her team on and off the ice.

Thank you to Sophia for your continued dedication to the support of ringette, while you pursue your post secondary studies in Environmental Science.
